Learning About Plants with Hands-on Learning

March 13, 2015 by Marie Leave a Comment

Glad to have you back for Day 3 of our Exploring Creation with Hands-on Learning series. Today we are exploring God creating land and plants. Such a great time of year for learning about plants and marvel at the wonderful beauty God has created for us.

Genesis 1: 9-13

And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so.

God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so.

The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

Exploring The Creation of Land

We LOVE hands on learning at Child Led Life and I’m excited to share with you a wonderful book with tons of great crafts for learning about Creation.

In Crafts To Celebrate God’s Creation we found a craft called Dry Land Appearing. We modified ours just a bit for what we already had at home.

Materials Needed:

  • Blue Construction Paper
  • Stapler
  • Glue
  • Blue “Water” (tissue paper, blue Easter basket filler)
  • Brown Construction Paper
  • Straw
  • Scissors

Fold the blue construction paper about 6 inches of the short side and staple the sides to make an pocket. Cover the outside of the folded part with clue and add your blue “water”. Cut a small triangle out of the bottom of the fold. Cut a mountain shaped piece from your brown construction paper and staple it to the straw. Slip the other end of the straw into the pocket and nestle the land down in the pocket so all the land is hidden. Make the dry land appear by pushing on the bottom of the straw.

This is a fun and easy craft to put together. We talked about how God made land and that land is formed through volcanoes!

Planting the Seed

Let the land produce vegetation. Our next activity ties in really well with the beginning of spring. God said for the land to produce vegetation and for seeds to bear fruit. We decided to learn about planting seeds by growing a bean plant.

The Great Grub Club has some easy to follow instructions on starting bean sprouts. We followed these instructions and are waiting patiently for our seeds to sprout! We really liked doing this activity on our outdoor mud table. Such a great way to really connect with God’s plants!

Studying How Seeds Grow

While our bean plant is growing, we did a couple learning activities to study how seeds grow.

First we used our model of the Life Cycle of a Bean Plant from Montessori By Mom. This is a fantastic resource to have real hands on learning about the different stages a bean plant goes through.

Then we used our 3 Part Cards from the Lift Cycle of a Plant by 3 Dinosaurs. This whole pack is FREE and has been great for our kids to review the plants life cycle each year. We laminated our cards and other pages from this pack.
