ABCs of the Bible Crafts: D is for David’s Harp

August 28, 2015 by Jennifer Tammy 2 Comments

We’re on letter “D” for our ABCs of the Bible crafts, a great series of Bible School Craft Ideas.

Today, I wanted to share with you one of my favourite bible crafts that I’ve done with my daughter. A letter “D” for David’s Harp!

ABCs of the Bible Crafts: D is for David's Harp. An easy craft to do after learning about King David, and possibly a safer craft than slingshot! Part of a great series of bible craft ideas for kids - the ABCs of the Bible Crafts. Check them all out.

David is a King from the Old Testament, you may remember him from the story of David and Goliath and he is credited as the author for the majority of the Book of Psalms (Song of Songs).

David was known to be a talented musician, one of my favourite references to his music playing is that it would drive away evil spirits:

1 Samuel 16:23 quote: Whenever the evil spirit from God bothered Saul, David would play his harp. Saul would relax and feel better, and the evil spirit would go away.

I read this passage with my daughter before starting our craft, and we discussed what things we do to drive away bad thoughts or feelings. (Personally, I think my daughter’s mind would get carried away if we used the terminology “evil spirits,” but do what works for your family.)

Bible School Craft Ideas: "D" is for David's Harp - kids love painting with glitter and gold while learning about King David!

Materials Needed for David’s Harp Craft:

  • Cardboard (cut into two “D” shapes)
  • Gold paint
  • Glitter or glitter paint, optional
  • Pipecleaners
  • Hot glue
  • Hot glue gun
  • Paintbrush
  • Craft tray

It would also be really fun to play some gentle harp music in the background as you do this craft.

Make your own "D" is for David's Harp bible craft after learning about how talented of a musician King David was!

Have your child paint one side of both “D” shapes with gold paint, and if using glitter, add it while the paint is still wet.

Set the painted “D” shapes out to dry.

Once dry, turn one of the D shapes upside down so that the unpainted side faces up and lay out your pipe cleaners to make “harp strings.” You could alternatively use yarn or string, but I found pipe cleaners easier for kids to handle, especially with the gluing stage.

Warm up your hot glue gun while trimming the pipe cleaners to fit your “D” shape.

Glue down all of the pipe cleaners, and then add glue all around the inside of the first “D” and push the second “D” on top to secure them together.

Trusting children with real tools is a great way to instill independence and responsibility - even just using a cool touch hot glue gun!

My daughter has just turned four and she has been using her own Cool Touch Hot Glue Gun for about 5 months. I’m comfortable with giving her the “controlled risk” that goes along with using real tools, but please know your child and your own comfort levels when deciding if you or your child will be doing the gluing for this bible school craft idea.
